American Honda Motor Company has expanded its fuel pump recall to over 2.5 million Honda and Acura vehicles manufactured between 2017 and 2020. Multiple models are impacted, including Accords, Civics, CR-Vs, RDXs, and more. This critical engine component can fail while driving, leading to a sudden loss of power that makes the vehicle unsafe to drive.
What Causes Fuel Pump Failure?
The fuel pump transfers gasoline from the tank to the engine. Honda’s investigation found that due to supplier manufacturing issues, surface cracks and excess fuel absorption may occur inside some pumps over time. This often ends in the complete failure of the fuel pump module. Without fuel, the engine will stall, losing primary functions including power steering and braking while in motion.

Honda’s Solution and Next Steps
The recall remedy involves the full replacement of the defective fuel pump assembly with a working OEM manufacturer pump. Local Honda and Acura dealerships will perform the repair which takes approximately 1-2 days at no charge once parts are more widely available. For owners who have already paid out of pocket for fuel pump repairs, reimbursement is available through Honda’s plan filed with NHTSA.
If you own a recalled vehicle, stop driving it immediately except for trips to the dealer. Attempting to drive a car with even early signs of fuel pump problems poses safety hazards.
