Jaguar Land Rover North America has issued a major safety recall affecting 20,999 Range Rover Evoque vehicles from model years 2021-2025 due to defective passenger airbags that may tear during deployment.
According to the safety recall report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the airbag defect stems from improper folding during the airbag assembly process, which can cause the airbag to tear when it deploys during a crash.
The Range Rover Evoque airbag recall affects vehicles manufactured between July 10, 2020, and October 7, 2024, at the Halewood Vehicle Assembly Plant.
Land Rover estimates that 100% of the recalled vehicles have this defect.
When passenger airbags tear during deployment, they cannot provide adequate protection to occupants during crashes.
Additionally, torn airbags may allow hot gases to escape, which can cause serious burn injuries to passengers.

What Caused the Range Rover Evoque Airbag Defect?
The Range Rover Evoque recall stems from a manufacturing defect in the passenger airbag assembly process.
During the investigation, Land Rover discovered that airbag material showed variability in the folds of the airbag.
This improper folding during the airbag assembly process creates weak points that can cause the airbag to tear when it deploys during a crash.
The timeline of events leading to this recall began in May 2023 when Land Rover’s Product Safety and Compliance Committee opened an investigation following reports of abnormal passenger airbag deployments from the manufacturer and assembler of the dashboard assembly.
Throughout 2023 and 2024, Land Rover conducted extensive testing and investigations involving multiple suppliers to understand the factors that could influence airbag deployment. The company tested various conditions, including temperature effects on dashboard components and airbag inflators.
In June 2025, Land Rover inspected field samples of undeployed airbag modules and found that the airbag material showed variability in how it was folded.
This fold variability was identified as a likely cause of the abnormal test results.
On June 30, 2025, Land Rover’s Senior Leadership and Recall Determination Committee decided that the investigation revealed an unreasonable safety risk and instructed that a safety recall be conducted.
Is Your Range Rover Evoque Part of This Recall?
The airbag recall affects all 2021-2025 model year Range Rover Evoque vehicles manufactured between July 10, 2020, and October 7, 2024.
Unlike some vehicle defects that provide warning signs before failure, this airbag issue has no symptoms that drivers can detect before the airbag deploys.
The folding defect is internal to the airbag module and cannot be seen or felt during normal vehicle operation.
To determine if your Range Rover Evoque is included in this recall, you can:
- Contact Land Rover customer service at 800-637-6837 and provide your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
- Visit your local Land Rover dealership, where service representatives can check your specific vehicle using Land Rover’s recall database
- Check the NHTSA website at www.nhtsa.gov and enter your VIN once the recall information becomes available
- Wait for official notification from Land Rover, as owner notification letters are expected to be mailed by August 29, 2025
The recall covers all Range Rover Evoque vehicles from the affected model years, regardless of trim level or options.
Safety Risks of the Defective Airbag System
Driving a Range Rover Evoque with a defective passenger airbag poses serious safety risks to vehicle occupants.
When the passenger airbag tears during deployment, it cannot provide adequate protection during a crash.
This significantly increases the risk of injury to the front passenger, particularly during frontal collisions where the airbag is designed to prevent the passenger from hitting the dashboard or windshield.
Additionally, a torn airbag may allow hot gases to escape during deployment.
These gases can cause serious burn injuries to the passenger’s face, arms, or other exposed areas.
The safety risk is particularly concerning because the airbag defect provides no warning signs.
Drivers and passengers have no way to know their airbag is defective until it deploys during an actual crash, when proper protection is most critical.
