2022 and 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee & Grand Cherokee L Problems & Complaints

September 8, 2026 by Chuck Panzarella

Short answer: The biggest problems with the 2022 and 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L are electrical system glitches, transmission shifting problems, and suspension and steering noise.

Electrical issues are by far the most common, while transmission and suspension problems are reported less often. In 4xe hybrid models, Jeep issued a recall covering a separate issue where the vehicle can suddenly lose power while driving.

2022 and 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee & Grand Cherokee L Problems & Complaints

Common 2022 & 2023 Grand Cherokee Problems

Electrical System and Infotainment Problems

Electrical issues are the single largest complaint category for both model years.

NHTSA has logged roughly 87 electrical complaints for the 2022 Grand Cherokee and 78 for the 2023 Grand Cherokee.

The Grand Cherokee L has fewer complaints overall, but electrical is still its top-reported category in both years.

Instrument Cluster, Software, and Accessory Glitches

Multiple owners describe the instrument cluster and touchscreen randomly switching to a foreign language and metric units, with the forward collision warning light getting stuck on and the paddle shifters going dead until the system resets itself.

Other owners report simpler failures, like a driver’s side power window and lock panel that stopped working entirely.

  • Severity: Moderate to high. The glitch itself doesn’t strand most drivers, but it can disable the forward collision warning system and paddle shifters while the vehicle is in motion, which is a safety-relevant symptom.
  • Manufacturer’s Response: Dealers have applied instrument cluster reprogramming under service bulletins, but several owners report the issue returning within weeks, and one was charged over $250 out of pocket for a “fix” that didn’t hold.
  • Fix: A software reset or module reprogram at the dealer resolves the symptoms temporarily for most owners who’ve reported it, but a permanent fix has not been consistently confirmed.

Grand Cherokee 4xe: Sudden Loss of Power

This issue is specific to the Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid trim, not the standard gas-powered Grand Cherokee or the Grand Cherokee L (which isn’t offered as a hybrid).

Dozens of 4xe owners across both model years describe the vehicle stalling or losing propulsion without warning, sometimes at highway speed.

Hybrid System Stalls and Shuts Down While Driving

Owners describe warning messages like “Service Hybrid Electric System” appearing on the dash right before the vehicle loses power, sometimes shifting itself into park while still moving.

One owner said the pattern of stalls “nearly caused accidents” with other vehicles, including a semi-truck.

Stellantis later issued NHTSA Recall 25V576 covering a hybrid control software defect tied to unexpected engine shutdown, which lines up with what owners had already been reporting.

  • Severity: Severe. Owners describe losing propulsion, steering assist, and braking assist simultaneously, sometimes while merging or crossing an intersection.
  • Manufacturer’s Response: Stellantis has acknowledged the pattern through Recall 25V576, but multiple owners report that a remedy still wasn’t available when they contacted their dealer, and some have waited months for parts.
  • Fix: Software resets have temporarily resolved individual incidents for some owners, but the underlying defect has required repeat dealer visits, and several owners report no lasting resolution.

Transmission Shifting Problems

NHTSA has logged around 29 drivetrain complaints for the 2022 Grand Cherokee and 30 for the 2023 Grand Cherokee, with a smaller but present count on the Grand Cherokee L.

Transmission Sticks in Gear or Shifts Roughly

A 2023 Grand Cherokee owner reported that “the transmission has become stuck in a lower gear three times in the past week” at an average of just 800 miles.

A 2023 Grand Cherokee L owner reported the transmission sticking in either first or second gear at around 5,000 miles.

A 2022 Grand Cherokee owner separately reported a rough shift between first and second gear.

  • Severity: Moderate to high. Hesitation or sticking gears from a stop can create a rear-end collision risk in traffic, and several reports occurred at very low mileage on essentially new vehicles.
  • Manufacturer’s Response: Jeep has issued technical service bulletins covering transmission oil pan and gasket work, but no dedicated recall for shift-quality complaints on these model years has been confirmed in these reports.
  • Fix: Dealers have addressed individual cases with transmission control module updates or component replacement, though outcomes vary by complaint.

Steering and Suspension Noise

Suspension complaints jump sharply in the 2023 model year, with roughly 41 NHTSA complaints for the Grand Cherokee and 17 for the Grand Cherokee L, alongside 35 steering complaints for the 2023 Grand Cherokee.

Suspension Rattling, Clunking, and Steering Complaints

A 2022 Grand Cherokee L owner reported a front rattle and clunk over small bumps at low speed, showing up at around 23,000 miles.

Other owners across both years describe similar noise complaints from the front suspension, along with a separate cluster of steering-related reports.

  • Severity: Low to moderate for the noise itself, though a subset of steering complaints describe a change in steering feel, which is worth having inspected promptly.
  • Manufacturer’s Response: No suspension-specific recall has been issued for these model years based on these reports; dealers have generally treated these as individual warranty repairs.
  • Fix: Sway bar end links, bushings, or mounts have been replaced under warranty in reported cases, though some owners note the noise returning later.

Issues Experienced by Grand Cherokee Drivers

NHTSA Complaint

A 2022 Grand Cherokee owner in Michigan reported the dashboard randomly switching to a foreign language and metric units, disabling the paddle shifters each time it happened.

After two years and seven dealer visits, she says the dealer told her there was “nothing they can do” and to wait for a software update that never came.

NHTSA Complaint

A 2023 Grand Cherokee owner reported that at just 800 miles, “the transmission has become stuck in a lower gear three times in the past week” while accelerating from a stop.

Kelley Blue Book Complaint

A 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe owner described the hybrid system failing repeatedly and the vehicle experiencing a “complete SUDDEN SHUT DOWN at 50 mph” with no lights, brakes, or power steering.

She says the dealer’s response, after the vehicle stalled out on the road, was to tell her she’d need to drive it in.

Legal Options for Defective Vehicle Owners

California’s lemon law, the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act, applies when a manufacturer can’t repair a substantial defect in your vehicle after a reasonable number of attempts.

A “substantial defect” is one that affects the vehicle’s use, value, or safety, which can include electrical failures, transmission problems, or a hybrid system that loses power while driving.

There’s no fixed number of repair attempts required by law, but courts and manufacturers often look at whether the same issue has come back after two or more repair visits, or whether the vehicle has been out of service for a cumulative 30 days or more.

If your vehicle qualifies, you may be entitled to a refund, a replacement vehicle, or a cash settlement, depending on the specifics of your case.

An open recall on your vehicle doesn’t disqualify a lemon law claim — in fact, an unresolved recall with no parts available, like some 4xe owners have described, can strengthen one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the most commonly reported problem for the 2022 and 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Electrical and software glitches are the single largest complaint category in NHTSA data for both model years, ahead of transmission and suspension issues.

Does the Grand Cherokee 4xe’s hybrid system lose power while driving?

Yes — dozens of owners have reported the plug-in hybrid system stalling or shutting down unexpectedly, an issue that led to NHTSA Recall 25V576, though this specific problem is tied to the 4xe trim rather than the standard gas Grand Cherokee or Grand Cherokee L.

How many repair attempts does a vehicle need before it qualifies as a lemon in California?

There’s no single fixed number, but two or more failed repair attempts for the same safety-related defect, or roughly 30 cumulative days out of service, are common benchmarks used to evaluate a claim.
